Beta-alanine is a component of the dipeptide carnosine (ß-alanyl-L-histidine), naturally occurring in skeletal muscle, particularly in fast-shrinkable type II muscle fibers. Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is formed by the coupling of L-arginine with alpha-ketoglutarate – an intermediate metabolite of the Krebs cycle – the metabolic pathway leading to the manufacture of energy substrate for working muscles – ATP molecules.
