L-Leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine are three of the eight essential amino acids that cannot be produced by the body and must therefore be taken in through diet or supplements. One of their main characteristics is that they have branched chains; therefore, they are defined accordingly as branched chain amino acids or, more commonly, BCAAs. Unlike some other amino acids that can only be metabolized in the liver, BCAAs can also be metabolized in the muscle, and can therefore be used directly for the reconstruction of damaged fibers, consequently resulting in shorter recovery times. Thirty-five percent of BCAAs are found in the muscles. Therefore, a good supply of only BCAAs after intense physical activity is vital for the reconstruction of muscle fibers, as they go directly into the muscle and quickly take effect.
A ratio of 2:1:1 indicates that the amount of Leucine is doubled compared to Valine and Isoleucine. This is because Leucine acts as a protein synthesis activator and also has anti-catabolic properties. Valine and isoleucine have purely energetic effects. Moreover, it seems that Leucine also functions as an anabolic substance, increasing the concentrations of GH (growth hormone).
Other features of branched amino acids include their ability to maintain unchanged and increase the testosterone levels (anabolic) and reduce cortisol levels (anti-anabolic), thus creating an anabolic balance conducive to the development of muscle mass. In the central nervous system, they compete with the essential amino acid tryptophan, decreasing the synthesis of serotonin, which contributes to feelings of fatigue. Preventing the catabolism of muscle protein and acting directly on feelings of fatigue, BCAAs are useful before, during and after all types of physical activity, including aerobic, anaerobic, mixed, as well as training periods of both short and long duration.
In order to maximize the absorption and effectiveness of the amino acids, vitamins B1 and B6 have also been added. Vitamins B6 contributes to the normal metabolism of protein and glycogen and reduces tiredness and fatigue, while vitamin B1 supports the maintenance of energy metabolism.
Another important feature of this product is the presence of Arginine, a conditionally essential amino acid. Using an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase, arginine is converted into citrulline in our bodies, consequently producing nitric oxide. Nitric oxide has a vasodilating effect that improves the transport of nutrients into the muscles. Moreover, Arginine and the amino acid glycine are both involved in the synthesis of creatine, which is known to stimulate the release of growth hormone. This would seem to be enhanced by the supplementation of creatine in conjunction with other amino acids, especially ornithine. Finally, arginine is the most effective insulinogenic amino acid, meaning that it can stimulate the secretion of insulin. Insulin stimulates vasodilation and blood flow, by increasing nitric oxide synthesis. Vasodilation leads to better nutrient transport, resulting in increased muscle mass and strength. The shape of alpha-ketoglutarate enhances these effects due to its high bioavailability, especially in muscle tissue. Furthermore, the ketoglutarate itself is also a source of arginine or ornithine, thus creating a perfect synergistic effect.
